USING ART TO FIGHT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Listen to Mdm Hamilton's grade 9 students, Esme Tanner and Darius Prasad in a CBC radio interview with UBC Eco-Art student Shimshon on October 21, 2013. It's about 5 minutes long and worth every minute. Mdm Hamilton and her students have worked very hard with the the restoration of the school creek wetlands. GOOD LUCK TO Mdm. Kelowna student makes BC Council...DASH is Proud to Announce the Healthy Living Youth Council. The Council provides youth members a forum to express ideas and explore school health
On November 23rd and 24th, 17 high school students from across British Columbia met as the province’s first ever Healthy Living Youth Council (HLYC). The members of the council will be the driving force behind the realization of a “for youth, by youth” mode of engaging students in their healthy living education. The HLYC is part of the Healthy Schools BC youth engagement strategy and is coordinated through DASH. The HLYC is a committee of students from all types of secondary schools and regions of the province including the Interior, Northern BC, Vancouver Island, and the Lower Mainland. To kick off the year, HLYC members, parents, teachers, and DASH youth engagement facilitators gathered in Vancouver for two action-packed days when the HLYC members mapped out priorities and goals, got to know each other, and had fun along the way! The students left the Kick Off event inspired and eager to return to their communities and continue the conversation of healthy schools, youth engagement, and student-led health initiatives. Throughout the year, members of the council will receive training to become Healthy Living Champions in their school communities. Members will share their ideas about DASH's Healthy Schools initiatives and support their schools through youth-driven inquiry projects. The purpose of the council is to give students the opportunity, tools and support to ask questions, provide feedback, and apply their ideas. Each Healthy Living Champion will have the training to implement their own ideas to make change in their school communities. Throughout the year, the HLYC will meet monthly and, with support from parents, teachers, and DASH, they will collaborate with each other and their respective school communities to develop and implement healthy schools initiatives. |
